Fire and flames

fireemberssmoke

At Restaurant 226, we draw on ancient cooking methods guided by a flame-first philosophy. We do not cook with fire; we cook through it. Wood becomes heat, heat becomes flavor, and flavor becomes memory, creating a dining experience that stays with you long after the last bite.

Experience

The ritual of fire-led cooking unfolds through a menu shaped by season, technique, and restraint. Each dish is guided by heat, timing, and intention. Crafted to be shared, savoured, and remembered.

Live Fire

Our open flames define each dish, from charred vegetables to ember-kissed proteins. The essence of fire is at the heart of our creations.

Smoke

The subtle infusion of aromatic Ironbark and Red Gum wood smoke brings depth to every bite.

Embers

The final stage of transformation: glowing coals provide gentle, sustained heat, elevating ingredients to something transcendent.

Our Story

Set within Invicta House on Flinders Lane, Restaurant 226 occupies a space rich in Melbourne's history — from silk factory to Victoria Police to backpackers' hostel — now reborn as a sanctuary where industrial legacy meets contemporary elegance.

226 is where fire speaks. Tucked beneath Flinders Lane, Restaurant 226 is a subterranean space where the city fades and flame takes over.

Here, steel meets stone. Leather meets smoke. Every detail, from the raw textures to the low glow of embers, reflects our obsession with fire. This is not just a kitchen. It's a chamber of transformation.

The name 226 (II.II.VI) is more than a number; it's rhythm, form, and precision. A nod to the old ways, reimagined with modern intent.
